James Dolphs Elmore Jr. sentenced to 20 years in Texas Killing Fields case

James Dolphs Elmore Jr. has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following a manslaughter conviction related to the “Texas Killing Fields” cases. A Galveston County jury found the 61-year-old guilty in the death of 16-year-old Laura Miller, whose body was discovered in 1986 in a field near League City.

Prosecutors alleged that Elmore prepared a dose of cocaine that was administered to Miller by Clyde Hedrick. Hedrick, a longtime friend of Elmore, was a primary suspect in the deaths of four women found in the area between 1984 and 1991. While authorities intended to seek grand jury indictments against Hedrick, he died by suicide before the proceedings could take place.

The “Texas Killing Fields” refers to a stretch of land along the I-45 corridor between Houston and Galveston where the bodies of at least 30 women have been recovered over several decades. Many of these deaths remain unsolved. The case involving Miller is significant as it marks a recent legal development in the long-running investigation into the area's history of violence.
