James Gray identifies ‘Two Lovers’ as his first film with true creative control
During a Q&A session at the London Film Festival, filmmaker James Gray identified his 2009 film ‘Two Lovers’ as his first true success and the first project where he possessed total creative control.
Gray expressed dissatisfaction with his three preceding films—‘Little Odessa’, ‘The Yards’, and ‘We Own the Night’—stating, “I don’t regard the films I made before this very highly. I hope people like them, but I don’t think of them as truly mine.” He noted that ‘Two Lovers’ was the first film that felt like a reflection of his true identity as a director because he was “left alone” to make exactly what he wanted.
Produced on a budget of approximately $9.5 million, ‘Two Lovers’ stars Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow. The film follows an introverted man returning to his parents’ home who becomes caught between family expectations and a tumultuous new relationship.
