James Gunn identifies Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman as DCU ‘diamond characters’

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has identified Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman as the ‘diamond characters’ of the DC Universe (DCU). In a recent social media post, Gunn clarified that the franchise's long-term roadmap is designed to encompass the DC brand as a whole rather than just specific story beats.

Gunn noted that while some stories will function as standalone projects, others will exist within larger narratives, such as the Superman Saga. He also suggested that characters like Krypto the Superdog, John Stewart, and Peacemaker have the potential to eventually achieve ‘diamond’ status.

The current development plan emphasizes filmmaker freedom and a variety of tones and ratings. While Batman and Wonder Woman are central to this vision, their specific roles in the new continuity are still in development, with the upcoming film ‘The Brave and the Bold’ being unconnected to Matt Reeves’ existing Batman films.
