James Gunn outlines DCU strategy using diamond characters

James Gunn, head of DC Studios, has clarified the long-term strategy for the DC Universe (DCU) by identifying the core characters that anchor the franchise. According to Gunn, the DCU is built around three “diamond” characters: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

Gunn explained that the studio’s 8 to 10-year roadmap involves using these major pillars to support and elevate lesser-known properties. The goal is to develop smaller characters into future “diamonds,” citing Krypto, John Stewart, and Peacemaker as examples of characters with the potential to become major franchise anchors.

This approach aims to reposition established icons while simultaneously building new, high-value properties from the ground up. While projects like ‘Superman’ and ‘Lanterns’ are part of the upcoming slate, Gunn noted that plans for certain characters, including Batman, have evolved since their initial announcement.
