James Gunn discusses DCU casting for Batman and Harley Quinn

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has provided updates regarding the continuity and casting for the new DC Universe (DCU). During the podcast “The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon?”, Gunn confirmed that while most of the 2021 film “The Suicide Squad” is considered canon, the future of Harley Quinn remains uncertain.

Gunn stated that Harley Quinn will almost certainly appear in the DCU, but the studio is unsure if Margot Robbie intends to return to the role. Gunn expressed a desire to work with Robbie again, noting he would “bend over backwards” to justify her character's presence in the new continuity if she accepts. If she chooses not to return, the studio may recast the character to avoid being tied to previous storylines.

Regarding Batman, Gunn clarified that casting for “The Brave and the Bold” will begin soon. He emphasized that the studio is looking for the best acting talent rather than pure star power. The new Batman will be a contemporary of Superman, with an age profile similar to David Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent, rather than a veteran character.
