Metallica frontman James Hetfield has identified Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi as the ultimate ‘Riff Lord.’ During a recent episode of his ‘Riff Life’ show on SiriusXM’s Maximum Metallica, Hetfield credited Iommi as his primary inspiration for rhythm guitar playing and songwriting.

Hetfield specifically cited the Black Sabbath track ‘Children of the Grave’ as a major influence, noting how Iommi builds upon the central riff by incorporating larger chords to open up the song. He also expressed appreciation for the track's percussion and the ghostly guitar sounds featured at the end of the recording.
