James Hird’s Coaching Suitability Scrutinized by Essendon Panel

Essendon officials have been urged to evaluate former captain James Hird on objective criteria rather than sentiment as the club considers him for the senior coaching role. Former Hawthorn coach Peter Schwab, who sat on the panel that selected Chris Fagan for the Brisbane Lions, questioned whether Hird “ticks all the boxes” needed for a successful modern AFL coach. Simon Madden echoed the call for a factual assessment, asking, “Has he been involved in enough modern footy?”

Hird’s résumé includes two premierships as a player, a Brownlow Medal, five Best‑and‑Fairest awards and five All‑Australian selections, but his coaching record at Essendon from 2011‑2015 was 41 wins, one draw and 42 losses, ending with an elimination final in 2011. He has not held a senior AFL coaching position since his suspension in 2014 and currently serves as director of coaching at VFL club Port Melbourne. The panel is advised to weigh his past achievements against his recent lack of senior‑level coaching experience.
