Jaume I commemorated on 750th death anniversary across Valencia

The 750th anniversary of King Jaume I’s death on 27 July 1276 was marked with a series of events in the Valencian Community. At the Royal Monastery of Poblet, civil‑society groups including the Associació Cívica Valenciana Tirant lo Blanc took part in a solemn ceremony. The Muixeranga de la Marina Alta performed a human‑tower tribute, a laurel crown was placed on the tomb, and Professor Magí Sunyer delivered a scholarly presentation on the king’s historical significance.

Other commemorations highlighted Jaume I’s lasting legacy. A historian’s new book examined the king’s reception from the 13th to the 21st century, emphasizing his role as the founder of the Valencian identity and the linguistic spread of Catalan‑Valencian. In Alicante, scholars noted how the king’s conquest shaped the region’s demographic and linguistic landscape. Salou recalled the port’s historic role as the launch point of Jaume I’s 1229 expedition that conquered Mallorca, underscoring the city’s contribution to the Crown of Aragon’s Mediterranean expansion.
