James Johnson to return to Indiana Pacers on Exhibit 9 deal

Free agent forward James Johnson has agreed to sign a non-guaranteed training camp contract with the Indiana Pacers. The deal includes Exhibit 9 language, and the 39-year-old veteran will join the team for training camp next week following a recent players-only mini-camp in Nashville.

Johnson, a veteran with 16 years of NBA service, has been a significant locker-room presence for the Pacers since 2022. While his on-court statistics have declined, he is highly regarded by teammates and head coach Rick Carlisle for his leadership and mentorship.

Due to the Pacers' current salary cap constraints, it is unlikely Johnson will remain on the roster for the regular season unless the team sheds salary through a trade. However, the club may have the capacity to add him to the roster on a prorated veteran’s minimum deal as of November 5.
