James Martin faces criticism over comments on sexuality and Church doctrine

Jesuit priest James Martin has drawn criticism for comments regarding his detractors and his approach to Catholic doctrine concerning LGBTQ issues. In a recent social media post, Martin suggested that individuals who express rage against his ministry may be “struggling with their own sexuality,” citing an instance where a former critic reportedly came out as homosexual.

Critics argue that Martin’s work undermines official Catholic teachings. While the Catechism of the Catholic Church describes homosexual acts as “intrinsically disordered” and calls for adherents to live in chastity, Martin has been accused of using ambiguous language to soften these doctrines. Some observers claim he reframes theological truths as matters of personal feeling, describing certain Church teachings as “unnecessarily cruel” or “hurtful” rather than addressing the doctrinal substance directly.

Martin currently holds a prominent position within the Jesuit order, including the direction of the American magazine, América.
