James McClean clarifies mental health comments following backlash

Former Republic of Ireland international James McClean has addressed controversy surrounding remarks he made regarding men’s mental health and therapy. The backlash followed an interview where McClean described seeking a psychologist as “weak,” a comment that drew condemnation from his club, Derry City.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio One, McClean clarified that his remarks were intended to describe his personal experience rather than criticize those who seek professional support. He stated that while he finds exercise and the gym to be his most effective outlets, he commends anyone who utilizes therapy to manage their mental health.

McClean acknowledged that his use of the word “weakness” was poorly judged and noted that he often bottles up emotions. He expressed frustration that critics appeared to rely on short extracts of his conversation rather than the full context, which he claims makes it clear he was speaking only of his own choices.
