James Niggemeyer reflects on stopping Dimebag Darrell's killer

Former Columbus police officer James Niggemeyer has spoken out about his role in stopping the 2004 mass shooting at the Alrosa Villa nightclub, an event that claimed the life of Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell.

During the incident on December 8, 2004, shooter Nathan Gale killed Darrell and three others before taking a hostage at gunpoint. Niggemeyer, who arrived on the scene within minutes, used a Remington 870 shotgun to shoot and kill Gale, preventing further casualties. Niggemeyer described experiencing ‘tunnel vision’ during the confrontation, noting that he felt he could not wait for reinforcements while the suspect held a hostage.

While Niggemeyer stated in a recent podcast interview that he does ‘not regret it for one minute’ because he saved lives, the trauma of the event significantly impacted his health. The psychological burden led to panic attacks and nightmares, eventually resulting in his medical retirement from the police force after he was reassigned to investigative duties.
