Plover faces a first‑degree murder charge – upgraded from second‑degree – and a dangerous‑driving charge that caused bodily harm to a second victim on the day of the attack. Earlier, he had been convicted of assault by choking and three counts of uttering threats in 2024 and sentenced to 12 months in November 2025. The case has drawn attention to Bill C‑225, “Bailey’s Law”, which received royal assent on June 17, 2026 and classifies murders linked to coercive control as first‑degree.
