James Stagg and the meteorological role in the Normandy landings

The film ‘Pressure’ (Tiempo de Victoria), directed by Anthony Maras, explores the critical role of meteorology during the D-Day landings in Normandy. Based on the novel by David Haig, the story focuses on Scottish Captain James Stagg, the meteorologist who provided the essential weather forecast that allowed the Allied invasion to proceed.

Historically, the success of Operation Overlord relied on specific conditions, including a full moon to provide light for paratroopers and sufficient tidal movement. Stagg’s ability to predict a brief window of favorable weather amidst severe storms provided a decisive advantage over German meteorologists, who had predicted continued bad weather. This intelligence allowed General Eisenhower to execute the landings and maintain the element of surprise, a factor credited to having ‘better meteorologists than the Germans’.

The film features a cast including Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser, recreating the high-stakes discussions within the meteorological team that preceded the June 6, 1944, invasion.
