James Talarico faces scrutiny over debunked rumors and TikTok activity
Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico is facing scrutiny following a debunked viral rumor and reports regarding social media activity in the Texas Senate race.
Investigations have refuted claims that Talarico spent a recent nine-day absence at a behavioral health facility in Ohio. Timestamped security footage reviewed by The New York Times placed Talarico at his Austin home during the period in question, and the facility denied treating him. While the campaign cited security concerns for not releasing the footage publicly, critics have questioned why the campaign waited to address the rumor until it had spread widely on social media.
Additionally, a report indicates a surge of TikTok content focused on the race between Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton. Analysis shows that approximately 70% of TikTok posts regarding the race focused on Talarico, often driven by influencers located outside of Texas. While some content was positive, other clips highlighted Talarico’s past comments on Christianity and transgender issues. The report also found that dozens of accounts receiving positive clips about Talarico were paid $4 per 1,000 views; Talarico’s campaign stated it is not involved in these payments, while a company named Frontier Media has claimed responsibility.
