James Talarico faces theological challenge over abortion comments
During a CNN/Jubilee town hall in Fort Worth, Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico sparked debate by stating that the Bible is ‘silent on the issue of abortion.’ Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian, argued that Christians must interpret various biblical passages before reaching ethical conclusions regarding abortion law, rather than assuming a singular consensus.
Jodi Hunt, a Catholic theologian and professor at the University of Dallas, challenged this assertion, citing the Ten Commandments and the precept ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ Hunt noted that many Catholics find the suggestion of biblical silence offensive, as Catholic teaching views human life as deserving protection from conception.
Following the exchange, Bishop Michael Olson of Fort Worth supported the theological perspective, describing the right to life as the ‘primordial moral issue’ upon which all other human rights depend. Talarico attempted to find common ground by expressing a desire for fewer unintended pregnancies and abortions through public policy and age-appropriate sex education. He is set to face Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the November 3 election.
