James Talarico faces scrutiny over use of religious rhetoric in campaign

Texas Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico is facing scrutiny for using religious rhetoric to support his political platform. During a sermon at Brentwood Baptist Church in Houston, Talarico argued that policies such as universal healthcare, child nutrition programs, and combating political corruption are supported on “biblical grounds.”

Critics, including Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, have condemned the approach, with some Republicans labeling clergy-candidates as “Pastors In Name Only” and accusing Talarico of blasphemy. The debate highlights a growing trend of Democratic candidates, some of whom are ordained clergy, invoking faith to appeal to voters in religious districts.

Additionally, Talarico’s economic views have come under fire following the resurfacing of past comments and connections to his mentor, Rev. Jim Rigby. While Talarico’s campaign has characterized him as a “proud capitalist,” critics point to his previous statements regarding the need to dismantle systems of capitalism, white supremacy, and climate change to address systemic oppression.
