James Taylor's Only No. 1 Hit 'You've Got a Friend

James Taylor Carole King You've Got a Friend Billboard Hot 100 Grammy 1972

James Taylor recorded Carole King's song "You've Got a Friend" for his 1971 album Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon after King wrote it in response to his earlier work. Producer Peter Asher suggested Taylor include the track, and Taylor called King for permission, receiving her blessing. Taylor's version reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the sole chart‑topping single of his career. Both artists earned Grammy Awards in 1972: Taylor for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and King for Song of the Year. King had intended the song for her own 1971 album Tapestry, and Taylor also played guitar on her recording, which featured guitarist Danny Kortchmar and backing vocals from Joni Mitchell.
