James Vaughan to remain Devon and Cornwall Police Chief until 2028

Chief Constable James Vaughan has agreed to extend his contract with the Devon and Cornwall Police, remaining in his position until August 2028. The extension is intended to provide leadership continuity during upcoming structural changes, specifically the government’s plan to abolish the Police and Crime Commissioner role in May 2028.

Since his appointment in December 2024, Vaughan has overseen organizational improvements aimed at rebuilding public confidence and enhancing performance. Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez noted that the force is no longer under enhanced monitoring by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services. Improvements have been reported in 101 and 999 call answering times, and the ‘Operation Resolve’ initiative has successfully returned more officers to frontline duties.
