James Vowles criticizes Formula 1 cost cap for failing to ensure sporting equity
Williams Racing Team Principal James Vowles has criticized the Formula 1 cost cap, stating that while it has achieved financial sustainability, it has failed to deliver sporting equity and field compression.
Vowles noted that the regulations have inadvertently created a ‘two-tier’ grid. Data indicates that the top four teams—Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull—now control 83% of the total points, an increase from approximately 70% before the cap was implemented. Additionally, the frequency of podium finishes for non-top-four teams has dropped from 10% to 5%.
A primary issue cited is the ‘cost cap trap,’ where smaller teams must allocate significant portions of their budget toward essential infrastructure and basic systems rather than direct car performance and upgrades. Vowles argued that instead of abolishing the cap, the sport needs reforms to ensure all teams can compete with equal tools and rules.
