James Wan discusses YouTube creators and evolving filmmaking tools

Director and producer James Wan discussed the evolving landscape for filmmakers at Variety’s Entertainment & Technology Summit. He highlighted how digital platforms like YouTube have lowered barriers to entry, allowing creators to bypass traditional industry systems and find audiences directly.

Wan noted that his production label, Atomic Monster, has a history of scouting internet-native talent, citing David Sandberg’s transition from viral YouTube shorts to the feature film ‘Lights Out’ as a primary example. He suggested that while technology makes it easier to produce content, the resulting crowded marketplace requires emerging filmmakers to focus on uniqueness and ‘small, intimate, high-concept’ projects to stand out.

Wan also remarked that the accessibility of modern tools keeps industry veterans on their toes and provides newcomers with immediate audience feedback, allowing them to adapt their work quickly.
