James Webb Space Telescope reveals new cosmic insights

Recent observations from the James Webb Space Telescope have provided significant new data regarding the early universe and celestial bodies. Researchers at the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, led by Oliver Zier, processed data to reconstruct the cosmos as it appeared 13.5 billion years ago. This reconstruction uses color coding to distinguish between dark matter, represented in purple, and ordinary matter, shown in yellow and orange, illustrating how dark matter acted as a scaffold for the first galaxies.

In a separate discovery, University of Arizona researchers utilized the telescope to identify variable water clouds surrounding the brown dwarf WISE 0855. These clouds change in thickness as the object rotates, exhibiting patterns similar to Earth's weather. The observations also detected rhythmic signals of carbon monoxide and phosphine being transported from deeper, warmer atmospheric layers via convection.

Additionally, a study published in Nature Astronomy, led by Montserrat Armas Padilla of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, examined the binary system Maxi J0637−430. Astronomers observed that as the system's luminosity decreased following an eruption, the outer regions of its accretion disk became brighter. This phenomenon occurs because the inner part of the disk, which had swollen and cast a shadow during the peak of the eruption, deflated, exposing the outer regions to radiation.
