James Webb Telescope Reveals Galaxy‑Killing Wind in Early Universe

Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) together with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have identified an extremely powerful outflow of gas from the distant galaxy CRISTAL‑02, which existed about one billion years after the Big Bang. The wind, driven by intense bursts of star formation and subsequent supernova explosions, is ejecting cold gas that would otherwise fuel future stars, providing a straightforward explanation for why many massive early galaxies stopped forming stars far earlier than expected.

Lead researcher Dr. Rebecca Davies of Swinburne University of Technology and associate professor Deanne Fisher reported that CRISTAL‑02 is forming stars at roughly twice the rate of similar‑sized galaxies while simultaneously launching a plume of gas that stretches almost as far as the galaxy itself. The discovery, published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society: Letters, offers new insight into the rapid growth and abrupt quenching of early massive galaxies.

The findings suggest that internal feedback from star formation, rather than exotic early‑universe physics, can drive galaxy‑wide winds capable of halting star production, reshaping models of early galaxy evolution.
