James Webb Telescope Uncovers Massive Galaxy Formed 300 Million Years After Big Bang
Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have identified a galaxy that appears to have formed just 300 million years after the Big Bang and contains roughly 100 billion stars. The galaxy’s size and maturity far exceed predictions from current cosmological models, prompting scientists to reassess theories of early‑universe galaxy formation.
In a separate observation, JWST captured a young galaxy cluster, MACS J0553.4‑3342, whose light dates back about 4.4 billion years, illustrating the telescope’s ability to probe large‑scale structures across cosmic time. Both findings highlight JWST’s powerful infrared instrumentation, which can detect faint, distant objects and provide unprecedented detail on the universe’s formative epochs.
