James Wiley proposes deleting Colorado voter rolls

James Wiley, the Republican nominee for Colorado Secretary of State, has proposed a plan to completely delete the state’s current voter rolls. During a radio interview, Wiley stated that one of his primary objectives would be to audit and, if possible, erase existing registration records to ensure rolls only contain eligible citizens.

Under this proposal, all Colorado voters would be required to re-register in person to participate in elections. Wiley cited an audit using a system called ELLY, which he claims suggests nearly one million registered voters in the state may have moved or passed away, creating discrepancies with USPS and Social Security databases.

Legal experts note that such a plan would conflict with both state and federal laws, including the 1993 National Voter Registration Act and the 2002 Help America Vote Act. These federal statutes establish specific protocols for maintaining voter rolls and removing individuals based on inactivity or death, rather than wholesale deletion.
