Jameson Williams wins appeal of NFL celebration fines

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams has successfully appealed two fines totaling $26,867 issued following a Week 2 game against the Buffalo Bills. The penalties were originally levied for an illegal celebration involving a smoking motion and a separate taunting charge.

In his appeal, Williams argued that the gesture was not offensive and noted that marijuana is legal in several states. Appeals officer and Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks rescinded the fines but advised Williams to celebrate with teammates in a “professional manner possible.”

This decision follows a broader NFL effort to penalize celebrations referencing drugs or alcohol, which has also seen fines rescinded for other players, such as Kyle Juszczyk and Jake Ferguson. Despite these earlier penalties, Williams has seen recent on-field success, including a 102-yard performance in Week 4 and two touchdowns in a recent win against the Arizona Cardinals.
