Jamia Millia Islamia shifts classes online amid student protests
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has transitioned all academic courses to online mode following escalating tensions and clashes on campus. The university administration cited student safety and security as the primary reasons for the decision, which remains in effect until further notice.
The unrest stems from a prolonged protest, now entering its 14th day, led by students demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU), which has been dissolved since 2006. Protesters, including several students on an indefinite hunger strike, have expanded their demands to include the revocation of disciplinary actions—such as suspensions and show-cause notices—and the resignation of the university’s Chief Proctor and security advisor.
Clashes reportedly occurred between students and campus security/staff during attempts to manage protest sites. While the university administration has expressed intentions to review disciplinary cases and has formed a committee to draft a new union constitution, students have rejected these assurances, demanding a clear timeline for elections. The situation has also been complicated by controversies regarding graffiti found on campus walls.
