Jamia Millia Islamia announces student union elections after 20-year hiatus

Jamia Millia Islamia has announced that student union elections will be held within 15 days of the approval of a new constitution, ending a nearly two-decade hiatus since the union was dissolved in 2006.

The decision follows two weeks of intense campus protests and hunger strikes by students demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU). In an order issued by Registrar Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi, the university administration also agreed to revoke suspension and show-cause notices issued to protesters and promised an inquiry into the conduct of security personnel during the unrest.

Despite the announcement, student groups remain divided. Some protesters have rejected the terms, arguing that the administration failed to provide a concrete timeline for the constitution's approval or a fixed election date. Other demands, including the resignation of the university’s Chief Proctor and a requirement for students to issue public apologies for allegedly defamatory social media posts, remain points of contention. Amid the ongoing standoff, the university has extended online classes and virtual mid-term examinations until November 8.
