Jamie Apostolovski recalls swallowing coin during 2001 grand final

Jamie Apostolovski is reflecting on a bizarre incident from 25 years ago during the 2001 Newcastle Knights grand final. While celebrating a try by Steve Simpson, a 10-cent coin flew out of Apostolovski’s shirt pocket and became lodged in his throat.

Apostolovski initially attempted to ignore the discomfort by continuing to drink, but eventually sought medical help. The incident required surgery to remove the coin from his oesophagus, an event that turned him into a media sensation at the time. He still retains the original coin today.
