Jamie Dimon warns US dollar could lose reserve status

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has warned that the US dollar could lose its status as the world’s primary reserve currency if the United States fails to maintain its economic and military supremacy over the next 25 years.

Dimon emphasized that national security and economic dominance are inextricably linked. He noted that a loss of leadership in these areas could lead to a fragmented and dangerous global landscape. To mitigate these risks, Dimon advocated for reducing US dependence on competitors like China, particularly in strategic sectors such as rare earth elements, aluminum, and steel production.

He further highlighted concerns regarding US manufacturing capacity, suggesting that current vulnerabilities could hinder the nation's ability to sustain a prolonged conflict, citing tensions in Iran as a relevant example. To address these strategic gaps, JPMorgan has initiated a $1.5 trillion, 10-year Security and Resilience Initiative focused on critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, energy, defense, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing.

Despite these warnings, the US dollar remains the dominant reserve currency, currently representing approximately 57% of global foreign exchange reserves. While the freezing of Russian assets in 2022 sparked debates about de-dollarization, Federal Reserve research has not yet indicated a significant shift in reserve holdings away from the dollar.
