Jamiyyathul Ulama seeks legal protection for Muslim women's religious attire

The Ampara District Jamiyyathul Ulama has called on the government to enact legislation ensuring the right of Muslim women to wear religious and cultural attire while working in all professional sectors.

The demand follows an incident at the Kalmunai North Base Hospital, where nine newly appointed Muslim female nursing assistants were reportedly transferred after being prevented from wearing hijabs alongside their professional uniforms. The organization described the transfers as an act of injustice that causes psychological distress and undermines coexistence.

Leaders of the Jamiyyathul Ulama stated that respecting religious and cultural identity is a fundamental right and that discriminating against such practices could fuel communal tensions. They expressed gratitude to parliamentary members of various ethnicities who have voiced support for the rights of Muslim women regarding their attire.
