Jammu and Kashmir Assembly clashes over holiday disputes
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly experienced heated disruptions during its autumn session as members of the ruling National Conference (NC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clashed over official holidays. The confrontation was sparked by NC legislator Abdul Majeed Larmi, who demanded the restoration of a public holiday for the birth anniversary of NC founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. Larmi further suggested that if such a holiday were not granted, the existing holiday commemorating Maharaja Hari Singh should be withdrawn.
BJP members protested the proposal, accusing the NC of disrespecting the memory of the former Maharaja. The resulting shouting matches and slogans from both sides disrupted proceedings for approximately 15 minutes. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather intervened to clarify that the Assembly and the Speaker do not hold the authority to grant or cancel government holidays.
Separately, BJP MLA Surjeet Singh Slathia urged the session to focus on pressing public concerns, including the rights of NRHM workers, daily wagers, and casual laborers. Meanwhile, J&K Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra accused the BJP of orchestrating ruckus to avoid scrutiny on issues such as statehood and misappropriation of donations.
