Jammu and Kashmir Assembly passes statehood resolution amid political unrest

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution calling for the immediate restoration of full statehood to the region. The resolution, moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, references previous legislative efforts from 2000 and 2024 regarding autonomy and special status.

The proceedings were marked by significant political turmoil. Members of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged protests, including a walkout and disruptive actions within the House. Following the admission of the statehood resolution, BJP MLA R. S. Pathania moved a no-confidence motion against Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, demanding the Speaker step aside from his duties.

Speaker Rather maintained that the no-confidence motion would be processed according to established rules, noting that it would be formally listed and addressed 14 days after receiving notice. He declined to vacate the chair while the House remained in session for legislative business.
