Jammu and Kashmir begins Census 2027 enumeration in snow-bound areas

Population enumeration for Census 2027 is scheduled to begin on September 1 in the snow-bound areas of Jammu and Kashmir and the Ladakh Union Territory. The month-long exercise, which runs until September 30, involves enumerators conducting physical door-to-door visits to record household details across 16 districts.

The census targets 1,115 villages and three municipalities—Uri, Gulmarg, and Kishtwar—classified as snow-bound non-synchronous areas. This early schedule is implemented to account for harsh winter conditions. Doda district contains the highest number of identified villages at 305, followed by Kishtwar with 158.

Amit Sharma, the Director of Census Operations for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, is overseeing the launch. This phase follows a self-enumeration period held from August 17 to August 31 and a previous census phase conducted in June.
