Jammu and Kashmir braces for heavy July rains and flash‑flood risk

The Meteorological Department of Srinagar has forecast widespread heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir from July 19, with peak activity expected on July 21‑22. Officials warned of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and water‑logging in vulnerable areas such as the Chenab Valley, Pir Panjal range and other hilly zones of both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions. Farmers were advised to suspend field work from July 20‑23, while travellers, transporters and tourists were urged to modify plans and stay updated on advisories.

A lightning strike in Poonch district on July 18 killed more than 60 sheep, a buffalo and a dog, though no humans were injured. In Anantnag district, a recent cloudburst damaged at least 18 houses and ruined orchards and farmland, leaving families without shelter. District administrations have placed field agencies on alert as the predicted heavy rain approaches.
