Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah advances sports tourism, budget rollout and statehood demand

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the fifth edition of the DP World Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) J&K Open 2026 at the Royal Springs Golf Course in Srinagar, saying the tournament will become an annual event to boost golf tourism and showcase the region as a premier sporting destination. More than 100 professional golfers, including overseas participants, praised the venue’s facilities and natural scenery.

On the same day the chief minister chaired a review of the 2026‑27 budget implementation, directing departments to expedite projects, strengthen coordination and ensure that budget commitments deliver tangible benefits to the public. He emphasized efficiency, transparency and accountability across health, education, social welfare and other sectors.

Abdullah also highlighted the need for world‑class cricket infrastructure after Jammu and Kashmir’s recent Ranji Trophy success, urging the BCCI to build two international‑standard stadiums in Jammu and the Valley to host IPL and international matches.

Separately, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah renewed his demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, warning that the 2019 conversion of the former state into a Union Territory could set a precedent for other states.
