Jammu and Kashmir face power shortages and weather shifts
Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are projected to face significant power shortages in October. According to the Northern Regional Power Committee (NRPC), a deficiency of approximately 400 MW is expected during solar peak hours, representing a 14 percent shortfall against the required 2850 MW. During non-solar peak hours, a deficiency of roughly 337 MW is anticipated.
Long-term projections indicate rising energy needs for Jammu and Kashmir. Demand is expected to increase by 450 MW during peak hours over the next three years, with peak demand potentially reaching 4262 MW by the 2029-30 fiscal year.
Separately, the Meteorological Centre has forecasted light snowfall in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and scattered rainfall between October 6 and 10. The forecast includes thunderstorms and gusty winds, prompting advisories for farmers and orchardists to secure apple and paddy harvests. Temperatures in several areas, including Srinagar and Qazigund, have recently remained above normal levels.
