Jammu and Kashmir High Court seeks update on retrieval of man deported to Pakistan

The Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court has requested an update from the Rajouri district administration regarding the retrieval of Aasim Sajjad, a youth deported to Pakistan in April 2025. The deportation occurred in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack.

Sajjad Ahmed, a resident of Rajnagar village in Rajouri, filed a contempt petition following a March 25 judgment. In that previous ruling, the court directed the Union Home Ministry to consider retrieving Sajjad on humanitarian grounds and to evaluate granting him Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Act, 1955.

Aasim Sajjad was born in Pakistan in 2006 to an Indian father and a Pakistani mother. While he and his mother arrived in India in 2007, his mother passed away in Rajouri in 2013. Following the 2025 terror attack, authorities deported the youth back to Pakistan. The court has scheduled the next hearing for November 2.
