Jammu and Kashmir orders inquiry into IAS officer's alleged abuse of woman official

The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered an in-depth inquiry into the alleged misconduct of senior IAS officer Kumar Rajeev Ranjan. The order follows a viral video showing Ranjan, the Administrative Secretary of the Labour and Employment Department, verbally abusing Beenish Wani, a 2015-batch JKAS officer, during a virtual review meeting for Mission YUVA.

In the footage, Ranjan is heard using derogatory language, including the phrase “bloody shit,” and telling Wani, “I am your boss, stupid.” He also reportedly ordered the immediate preparation of her suspension. Wani, who was attending the meeting from home while on leave for a fractured foot, confirmed the video's authenticity and emphasized the need to protect women's dignity in the workplace.

Mandeep Kaur, a 2004-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the inquiry officer and is required to submit a report within 15 days. The National Commission for Women has also taken suo motu cognisance of the incident, requesting an impartial inquiry and strict safeguards against workplace harassment. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for accountability, stating that such behavior must not be ignored.
