Jammu and Kashmir intensifies surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases
Jammu and Kashmir has intensified its surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) to improve early detection, case investigation, and public health responses. A state-level workshop is currently underway in Srinagar to train health officials in specimen collection, laboratory procedures, data analysis, and the use of a unified digital portal.
The surveillance program targets six specific diseases, including measles, rubella, and tetanus, with the goal of identifying vulnerable populations and gaps in immunization coverage. By monitoring disease patterns and immunity levels, health experts aim to implement targeted corrective interventions.
Previously supported by technical assistance from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the surveillance mechanism is transitioning to an indigenous system under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. This phased transition will begin at the state level and expand to hospitals and other healthcare tiers, with a projected completion date of March 2027.
