Omar Abdullah criticizes state-led Uniform Civil Code push

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has criticized the push for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in BJP-ruled states, arguing that such a significant national issue should be addressed by Parliament rather than through individual states. Abdullah questioned the universality of the code if it is only implemented in states governed by the BJP and noted that some National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies, such as the Janata Dal-United, have expressed opposition to its implementation in their respective states.

In a separate development, Maulana Arshad Madani, president of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, also criticized the proposed expansion of the UCC. He questioned whether the country would be governed by the Constitution or a political party's ideological agenda, stating that the move could undermine religious freedoms. The organization has approached the Uttarakhand High Court to challenge the code.

Within Jammu and Kashmir, political tensions remain high. The BJP has accused the National Conference-led government of limiting Assembly session durations to avoid scrutiny. Additionally, BJP leaders have alleged that the demand for statehood is a tactic to regain control over the local police force. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Abdullah dismissed rumors regarding the stability of his government, asserting he has “complete faith” in his MLAs and is not concerned by poaching attempts.
