Jammu and Kashmir medical interns strike for stipend hike
Medical interns pursuing MBBS and BDS degrees have launched an indefinite strike across various government medical colleges and hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir. The protesters are demanding an increase in their monthly stipend from the current Rs 12,300 to Rs 30,000.
Interns report that their remuneration has remained unchanged since 2019, despite rising living costs and heavy workloads. They highlighted a significant disparity compared to other Indian states, where stipends can reach between Rs 43,000 and Rs 44,000. The agitation includes institutions such as GMC Jammu, GMC Srinagar, GMC Anantnag, GMC Baramulla, GMC Handwara, and SKIMS Bemina.
The strike has impacted clinical services, including emergency rooms, wards, and outpatient departments (OPDs). While the interns have maintained peaceful demonstrations, they have stated they will refrain from clinical duties until their demands are addressed. Jammu and Kashmir Health Minister Sakina Ittoo has acknowledged that the demand for a stipend hike is legitimate.
