Jammu and Kashmir receives first seasonal snowfall in mountain passes

The first snowfall of the season has covered several high-altitude areas in Jammu and Kashmir, including the Gulmarg ski resort, Zojila Pass, Razdan Pass, and Sinthan Top. The fresh snow has drawn tourists to the region, though authorities have advised travelers and trekkers to exercise caution and avoid mountain routes until weather conditions stabilize.

The Meteorological Department has forecasted unsettled weather, including potential thunderstorms, gusty winds, and further precipitation in higher reaches, through October 15. Conditions are expected to improve thereafter, leading to generally dry weather for approximately ten days.

The weather shift has caused temperatures to drop, with Srinagar recording a maximum of 20 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam and Gulmarg saw temperatures of 14.2 and 11.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. Local farmers and apple growers have been advised to secure harvested grains and apple crops against adverse weather. While the paddy harvest is complete and 90 per cent of the apple crop has been picked, the recent rain is expected to benefit the upcoming sowing of Rabi crops.
