Jammu and Kashmir reports decline in road fatalities and accidents
Road fatalities and accidents in Jammu and Kashmir have seen a significant decline. Government data shows fatalities dropped from 1,090 in 2024 to 756 as of mid-September 2026. Similarly, road accidents decreased from 5,808 in 2024 to 4,222 during the same period.
Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo has directed agencies to accelerate the rectification of 367 identified accident black spots, 68 of which have already been fixed. The government aims to reduce fatalities to 600 or fewer by 2027 and 450 by 2030. To support these goals, ₹11.60 crore has been released to 15 districts for immediate corrective measures under the Road Safety Fund.
Efforts to improve safety include a UT-wide audit of 15 Level-III Trauma Centres to upgrade manpower and equipment, and the expansion of Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS) to rural areas. Additionally, technology-based enforcement has resulted in the issuance of over 10 lakh e-challans this year.
