Jammu and Kashmir reports rising college admissions amid staffing shortages

Jammu and Kashmir is experiencing shifts in its educational landscape. The Higher Education Department reported an 18 per cent increase in first-year college admissions this year. However, Education Minister Sakina Itoo noted challenges, including land disputes delaying the construction of permanent campuses for new colleges and a preference among students for established legacy institutions over newer ones.

In the medical sector, the National Medical Commission has updated the seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic session, increasing MBBS seats to 1,750 across 11 medical colleges in the region. This includes 1,600 seats in 10 government medical colleges and 150 in one private institution.

Despite these developments, the region faces significant staffing and data gaps. The School Education Department reported over 10,000 vacant teacher posts and 5,278 vacant master posts. Additionally, while 145 government degree colleges produce between 25,000 and 30,000 graduates annually, the government stated it currently lacks consolidated, standardized data regarding graduate employability and placement outcomes.
