Jammu and Kashmir sees contrasting Independence Day scenes

India's 80th Independence Day saw contrasting developments across the divided Jammu and Kashmir region. In Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, patriotic celebrations and Tiranga rallies were held in cities including Srinagar and Jammu. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, hoisting the flag at Bakhshi Stadium, emphasized his government's commitment to restoring statehood and constitutional guarantees while focusing on regional development and prosperity.

In contrast, reports indicated widespread strikes, boycotts, and protests in parts of Jammu and Kashmir and several northeastern Indian states, where some groups observed the day as a ‘Black Day’. In Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK), demonstrations occurred in areas such as Muzaffarabad and Mirpur, driven by grievances regarding taxation, rising prices, electricity issues, and demands for greater political rights.

In the northeastern states, including Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh, nationalist outfits called for a total boycott of official celebrations. Specifically, Naga groups observed August 14 as their own 80th Independence Day, citing a distinct political identity.
