Jammu and Kashmir targets 11,000 MW hydropower capacity by 2035

Jammu and Kashmir has established a target to increase its operational hydropower generation capacity to 10,969.65 MW by December 2035. This goal represents more than a threefold increase from the current installed capacity of 3,540.15 MW.

The roadmap, reviewed in a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, aims to strengthen the Union Territory’s energy security and decrease reliance on external power sources. Officials noted that the region has an identified hydropower potential of 14,635 MW, with the Chenab basin holding the largest share at 11,283 MW, followed by the Jhelum and Ravi basins.

Significant capacity additions are expected by the end of 2027 through the commissioning of the 1,000 MW Pakal Dul, 624 MW Kiru, and 12 MW Karnah hydroelectric projects. Further developments, including the 540 MW Kwar and 850 MW Ratle projects, are targeted for 2028, while additional Central Sector projects are expected to contribute further capacity by 2029.
