Jammu and Kashmir’s Government Medical Colleges Expand Postgraduate Offerings

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported that Jammu and Kashmir has six government medical colleges delivering a wide range of postgraduate (PG) programmes. The institutions – Government Medical College Anantnag, Baramulla, Kathua, Rajouri, Jammu and Srinagar – together provide dozens of MD, MS and MCh courses in specialties such as General Medicine, Anaesthesiology, Paediatrics, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Radiology and several super‑specialities. The Ministry noted that fee structures for these courses are set by the state or union territory governments, not centrally.

In addition, the Ministry of Ayush disclosed that the region hosts three recognised undergraduate Unani colleges with a combined intake of 160 BUMS seats and one postgraduate Unani institute, the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM) at Naseem Bagh, offering 18 MD‑Unani seats. A government survey showed high public awareness of AYUSH systems (over 94% in rural areas and 96% in urban areas) and moderate usage. The central council promotes Unani through outreach programmes and annual Unani Day.

These disclosures were made in written replies to questions raised in the Lok Sabha, providing a detailed picture of higher‑education capacity in both allopathic and Unani medical streams in the union territory.
