Jammu court restricts handcuffing of separatist Shabir Shah

A special NIA court in Jammu has ordered jail authorities to ensure that Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah is not unnecessarily handcuffed when being escorted to hospitals or courtrooms.

The 74-year-old Shah, who is currently in custody at the Kot Bhalwal Central Jail, filed a plea citing his advanced age and various medical ailments, including hypertension, diabetes, and spinal issues. He argued that being shackled could cause him pain and endanger his health.

Special Judge Prem Sagar ruled that while jail authorities must follow standard security protocols and provide sufficient personnel for his escort, they must avoid unnecessary handcuffing. The court also noted that Shah should receive specialized medical treatment as needed, given his health condition.
