EU reports 55% drop in illegal migration as border pressures ease
The European Commission says illegal migration at the EU’s external borders has fallen by 55% over the past two years, with just over 49,000 cases recorded so far in 2026. Commissioner for Home Affairs Magnus Brunner linked the decline to tighter border monitoring, faster asylum procedures and improved return mechanisms.
In Spain’s North‑African enclave of Ceuta, about 60,000 migrants entered in a single day, a surge that prompted Denmark, Italy, the Czech Republic and Finland to call for a temporary suspension of Spain’s Schengen participation. Slovakia’s interior minister Matus Sutaj Estok warned that without stronger protection of the external Schengen frontier, the bloc could be forced to reinstate border checks, and offered to send police personnel and equipment to assist Spain.
The situation is being described as the first major test of the EU’s new migration and asylum pact, which entered into force in June.
